Bonne année 2005 - Happy New Year (+)
May 2005 bring you the happiness you seek.
"One has to be a light to oneself; this light is the law. There is no other law. All the other laws are made by thought and so are fragmentary and contradictory. To be a light to oneself is not to follow the light of another, however reasonable, logical, historical, and however convincing. You cannot be a light to yourself if you are in the dark shadows of authority, of dogma, of conclusion." (Jiddu Krishnamurti / This Light in Oneself) 28 décembre 2004 | 08:24

Looking Back at an Eclipsed Earth (+)
Here is what the Earth looks like during a solar eclipse. The shadow of the Moon can be seen darkening part of Earth. This shadow moved across the Earth at nearly 2000 kilometers per hour. Only observers near the center of the dark circle see a total solar eclipse - others see a partial eclipse where only part of the Sun appears blocked by the Moon. This spectacular picture of the 1999 August 11 solar eclipse was one of the last ever taken from the Mir space station, which was deorbited in a controlled re-entry in 2001.

From Reuters: "Hurricane Ivan slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast early on Thursday with devastating winds and pounding waves that ripped homes apart, flooded deep inland and spawned tornadoes that killed at least two people. Ivan's eye moved ashore just after 2 a.m. CDT (3 a.m. EDT) at Gulf Shores, Alabama, east of New Orleans and just west of Florida's panhandle, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. But the Texas-sized storm's wrath was felt over a 400-mile stretch of the coast and well inland, where thousands of people huddled in shelters and hundreds of thousands were left without power. Revenge of the Tattooed Nerds (+)
One of the things I love about tattooing is that it attracts interesting people from all demographics. The simple truth is that some people feel a desire to permanently mark themselves with things that profoundly affect their lives. I don’t know if this is some genetic leftover that helped primitive humans hold their social fabric together, or whether it’s an unavoidable byproduct of being both narcissistic and sentient creatures. Either way, people get tattooed every day with the things that define their lives — and "nerds" and "geeks" are no different. 13 septembre 2004 | 06:44

The first American woman to walk around the world will finish on July 30 (+)
Polly Letofsky walked almost 14,000 miles for five years (1,825 days). She'll be back home in Vail, Colorado next week. She began her journey on August 1, 1999 to raise awareness about breast cancer. She walked every day and visited 22 countries. Her website, GlobalWalk, chronicles her trip: "Letofsky was in Malaysia on September 11, 2001, and recalls the date vividly. "I wasn't around when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and I was too young to remember where I was the day JFK was shot. But I'll never forget where I was the day America lost its innocence. I was on an oil palm plantation in Malaysia grieving with Muslims." After Malaysia, Letofsky traveled through Thailand, India, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. Then it was on to Germany, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Scotland and Ireland. From there she headed back to America, flying into New York, walking through New Jersey, Pennsylvania and north to Canada. Next came the upper Midwest states, and finally, Colorado. Though initially her goal was to raise awareness and not necessarily funds, she has raised more than $200,000 in eight different currencies."
