Bonne année 2005 - Happy New Year (+)

(Jiddu Krishnamurti / 1895-1986 / La Révolution du silence) May 2005 bring you the happiness you seek. "One has to be a light to oneself; this light is the law. There is no other law. All the other laws are made by thought and so are fragmentary and contradictory. To be a light to oneself is not to follow the light of another, however reasonable, logical, historical, and however convincing. You cannot be a light to yourself if you are in the dark shadows of authority, of dogma, of conclusion." (Jiddu Krishnamurti / This Light in Oneself)

Who remembers the Aral Sea? (+)

Fourteen years ago: "The Royal Geographical Society has unveiled evidence that the devastated region around the Aral Sea in Central Asia is the world's worst ecological disaster. Three British scientists have just come back from a visit to the lake that straddles the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. What was once the fourth largest area of fresh water in the world has shrunk by two-thirds. It has fallen in depth by more that 14 metres (45 feet) in the past 30 years endangering the lives of the four million inhabitants of the region."

A Chinese-Australian woman in the market for a husband decided that an advertisement in the lonely hearts column of a newspaper simply wouldn't do. Nor would posting an item on the internet. So Helen Zou, a 40-year-old Sydney civil engineer, went public in the most dramatic form.

Christopher Reeve - known to millions for the Superman films in which he starred - has died in New York at the age of 52. His publicist says he suffered cardiac arrest and fell into a coma. Reeve was left almost completely paralysed by a horse-riding accident in 1995, which turned him into a passionate advocate of spinal cord research. [BBC] I had posted this picture, taken in Redmond (Wa) a few months ago. I'm posting it again this morning, as a tribute to a man of extraordinary courage. Farewell M. Reeve...

Looking Back at an Eclipsed Earth (+)

Here is what the Earth looks like during a solar eclipse. The shadow of the Moon can be seen darkening part of Earth. This shadow moved across the Earth at nearly 2000 kilometers per hour. Only observers near the center of the dark circle see a total solar eclipse - others see a partial eclipse where only part of the Sun appears blocked by the Moon. This spectacular picture of the 1999 August 11 solar eclipse was one of the last ever taken from the Mir space station, which was deorbited in a controlled re-entry in 2001.

Ivan The Terrible (+)

From Reuters: "Hurricane Ivan slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast early on Thursday with devastating winds and pounding waves that ripped homes apart, flooded deep inland and spawned tornadoes that killed at least two people. Ivan's eye moved ashore just after 2 a.m. CDT (3 a.m. EDT) at Gulf Shores, Alabama, east of New Orleans and just west of Florida's panhandle, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. But the Texas-sized storm's wrath was felt over a 400-mile stretch of the coast and well inland, where thousands of people huddled in shelters and hundreds of thousands were left without power. "

Kinmen Island was once a staunch outpost of the Cold War between Taiwan and Mainland China. Many soldiers and civilians lost their lives in the famous Guningtou Battle and Artillery Battle of August 23, 1958. Because of its particular geological location, Kinmen took center stage in the military and political struggles between Taiwan and Mainland China during the Cold War, used as a trump card in each side's policies and challenges to "Reclaim Mainland" and "Liberate Taiwan."

Revenge of the Tattooed Nerds (+)

One of the things I love about tattooing is that it attracts interesting people from all demographics. The simple truth is that some people feel a desire to permanently mark themselves with things that profoundly affect their lives. I don’t know if this is some genetic leftover that helped primitive humans hold their social fabric together, or whether it’s an unavoidable byproduct of being both narcissistic and sentient creatures. Either way, people get tattooed every day with the things that define their lives — and "nerds" and "geeks" are no different.
