The BBC launches an Iraq elections blog (+)

The BBC has set up - as the news corporation does in case of important news coverage - a daily Iraq log. As stated on the Iraq election log homepage: "For two weeks, we will be publishing a range of accounts from people inside Iraq about their day-to-day lives." The Iraq log also has its own RSS feed.

Kevin Sites explains what he saw in Falluja (+)

"Since the shooting in the Mosque, I've been haunted that I have not been able to tell you directly what I saw or explain the process by which the world came to see it as well. As you know, I'm not some war zone tourist with a camera who doesn't understand that ugly things happen in combat. I've spent most of the last five years covering global conflict. But I have never in my career been a 'gotcha' reporter -- hoping for people to commit wrongdoings so I can catch them at it. This week I've even been shocked to see myself painted as some kind of anti-war activist. [...] It's time you to have the facts from me, in my own words, about what I saw -- without imposing on that Marine -- guilt or innocence or anything in between." Read the rest of his Open Letter to Devil Dogs of the 3.1.

From Al-Jazeera, this report that US troops in Falluja are ordered "to shoot any male on the street between the ages of 15 and 50 if they were seen as a security threat, regardless of whether they had a weapon."

As stated on his blog, "Kevin Sites is a freelance solo journalist currently on assignment for NBC News in Iraq, but this site is a personal website not affiliated with or funded by NBC News." He posts pictures, interviews with soldiers and comments on what he sees in Iraq. A very touching, informative - and scary - blog. [Via INTL News by Joe Broadhurst]

Mutiny in Iraq: an entire platoon arrested (+)

The Clarion Ledger reports: "A 17-member Army Reserve platoon with troops from Jackson and around the Southeast deployed to Iraq is under arrest for refusing a "suicide mission" to deliver fuel, the troops' relatives said Thursday. The soldiers refused an order on Wednesday to go to Taji, Iraq — north of Baghdad — because their vehicles were considered "deadlined" or extremely unsafe, said Patricia McCook of Jackson, wife of Sgt. Larry O. McCook."

New torture claims in Iraq (+)

Allegations that American soldiers routinely tortured and maltreated detainees have emerged from a third Iraqi city, renewing fears that abuse similar to that inflicted in Abu Ghraib jail in Baghdad has been systematic and widespread. American soldiers in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul beat and stripped detainees, threatened sexual abuse and forced them to listen to loud Western music, according to statements seen by the Guardian. Sigh... The rest of the article is here.

Iraqi artists on the Web (+)

"We cannot experience a cultural product if we don't understand the forces that affect its practice," says Mohammed Abdullah, a 39-year-old artist and curator who was born in Iraq and is now based in the Netherlands. "Over the past three decades - an era marked by political upheaval, dictatorship, war, embargo, and exile - Iraqi intellectuals have had to practice (a) culture of necessity and survival." In a country still ravaged by war, this project underlines the hopes of many to -one day - be able to live peacefully.

Prisoners being transported to Guantanamo (+)

There has been some talk about the treatment of Guantanamo prisoners but as any news story, it rapidly faded into oblivion replaced by John Kerry and the Athens Olympics. I found these pictures while surfing for information on how many Gitmo prisoners has been released and what fate awaited those still in Cuba... I havent't found the answer yet but I'm still searching. Lynndie England is being tried, but I doubt any legal measures will be taken against the American soldiers that have mistreated Gitmo prisoners for two long years. And we thought Abu Ghraib was bad!

'Secret film shows Iraq prisoners sodomised' (+)

That's what Seymour Hersh told an audience during a meeting of the American Civil Liberties Union. New photos (click on the Photo Gallery link) have surfaced, showing once again the unbelievable brutality of US soldiers. The trials have been halted, and even if Paul Bremer is called to testify, we all know that the decision and policy makers (Donald Rumsfeld comes to mind) will never be charged. The only thing I can hope for is that Iraq will cost Bush is re-election.

Read on Fox News: The footage, of an interview with Berg, "is approximately 20 minutes long. We are not releasing it to the media," Moore said in a statement. "It is not in the film. We are dealing privately with the family." Neither Moore nor his representatives would describe the nature or contents of the interview with Berg, who held staunch pro-war views. No one answered the phone Thursday at the home of Berg's parents in West Chester, Pa.
