The burger blog (+)

Here's a nice blog, featured in Yahoo's weekly picks, A Hamburger Today. "A Hamburger Today is a group weblog about America's favorite lunchtime sandwich, the hamburger. Cheeseburgers, too. Heck, even if it's topped with green chiles or peanut butter or stuffed with truffles, we cover it. Visit AHT for a beefy mix of news digests, original reviews, and musings on burgers. Our favorite condiment here is opinion, and we've got plenty of it."

Bloglines down back up (+)

For the last hour or so, Bloglines has been down: access to my RSS feeds is impossible. No word about that problem on the Bloglines blog but when I tried to setup a new account, I got a "There is a problem with the database. Please try again later" error message, eventhough the search engine is working fine. Note to self: export Bloglines subscriptions into another RSS reader.

Apple vs bloggers (+)

"Apple sent legal threats to the publishers of the Mac-centric weblogs AppleInsider and PowerPage for posting information about a product code-named "Asteroid." [...] On December 13, Apple filed suit against "Does 1-20" in a Santa Clara court. The company obtained a court order that allows it to issue subpoenas to AppleInsider and PowerPage for the names of the "Does" who allegedly leaked the information in question. EFF is defending the publishers against these subpoenas, arguing that the anonymity of bloggers' sources is protected by the same laws that protect sources providing information to journalists." What will happen? If they're lucky, bloggers might get the same kind of legal protection as journalists. Honestly, I doubt this will happen. [via Wizbang]

Editorsweblog.org links a Wall Street Journal article: " "WaveofDestruction.org, created by an Australian blogger to host tsunami videos, logged 682,366 unique visitors from last Wednesday through Sunday morning, and has more than 25 amateur videos of the impact so far," the Journal wrote. "'The ease of putting something online is pretty much instant,' says Geoffrey Huntley, the founder of Wave of Destruction. 'At a media company, I'm sure there are channels you have to go through -- copyright, legal, editorial, etc. Blogging is instant.'"" On a lighter note, J-Walk Blog mentions this interesting piece published in India Daily: "Lots of people now from the Tsunami and earthquake hit areas are reporting about strange Unidentified Flying Objects they saw a few days before the mega quake and Tsunami. People in Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Island as well as many in Indonesia were reporting for some time about strange flying objects in the sky. The local media in these areas did not know what to do with the reported sightings. But it seems now from the reports that many UFOs were in the sky and were trying to communicate something. "

Blogs as a Christmas gift... (+)

Here's a very unusual Christmas gift: "Have friends or family that would get a lot from reading blogs but just can't get in the habit? You know, they heard about this "blogs" thing (you know, those weird, abundant personal publishing websites) after Trent Lott or Dan Rather got busted, and you tried to show them one, and you even bookmarked it, but they never went back to the website? Even though you're pretty sure they'd like it? Well this Christmas, that problem is so solved. Just enter their email address, pick the blogs they'd like, and starting December 25th they'll get fresh blogs delivered daily to their doorstep (doorstep = email box). They can unsubscribe whenever they want to, but if you pick blogs they'd like, why would they? Delivery by Christmas guaranteed! Free shipping! Beat the long lines! Small ecological footprint! No car accidents!" If you're interested, go to Blogs 4 X-Mas... [Via Waxy.org]

Kevin Sites explains what he saw in Falluja (+)

"Since the shooting in the Mosque, I've been haunted that I have not been able to tell you directly what I saw or explain the process by which the world came to see it as well. As you know, I'm not some war zone tourist with a camera who doesn't understand that ugly things happen in combat. I've spent most of the last five years covering global conflict. But I have never in my career been a 'gotcha' reporter -- hoping for people to commit wrongdoings so I can catch them at it. This week I've even been shocked to see myself painted as some kind of anti-war activist. [...] It's time you to have the facts from me, in my own words, about what I saw -- without imposing on that Marine -- guilt or innocence or anything in between." A Forbes article about blogs (+)

Journalist Arik Hesseldahl lists and reviews mobile and multimedia blogging. He has an interesting view of blogs and bloggers - that will eventually evolve within a couple of years but that is, as of today, quite relevant: "Indeed, that is what the whole "blogging revolution" seemed to be about -- endless gabbing about pretty much any topic by a few million souls with more time than talent. And while a few real gems emerged from it all, on the whole most blogging needs to remain what it is, a private form of entertainment and information."

Subscribers to the new blog tracking service automatically receive daily (or more frequent) e-mail alerts on new blog postings that contain the client's specified keywords and phrases." [Via The Blog Herald] What I find a bit scary is how BlogSquirrel describes its services: "By using BlogSquirrel to automatically search, monitor and "clip" blogs, you and your organization can build an effective "early warning system" to identify problems and issues that may threaten corporate or brand reputation ... or present new opportunities for business growth." Does that mean bloggers will be sued when they criticize a product or a company?

Not Nick Nolte's Blog (+)

From EOnline: "Nick Nolte has nothing to do with Nick Nolte's Diary, much less its chronicling of Malibu-style banality and all the fresh-squeezed juice runs it entails. "We have no affiliation with it in any way," publicist Arnold Robinson said Monday. So, if Nick Nolte's not writing Nick Nolte's Diary, just who is? Christian Newton and Casey McAdams. The aspiring screenwriters, both Nolte fans, concocted the site as an antidote to the actor's official, but perpetually "under construction" URL.

Do you think Microsoft sucks? (+)

Robert Scoble tells of his encounter, on a plane, with a guy that explained to him why he thought Microsoft - and Microsoft products - sucked. As he says: "I tell that story because for the past two weeks I've gotten quite a few people to tell me just how our products (or our company) suck. The thing is, there's a group of us at Microsoft who are tired of being told this and who are going to turn around the world's perception of the products we build. This group is growing in size." And he asks: "So, I'm looking for more people who think our products or processes or services suck. Tell us why."

Why Reuters Won't Say "Terrorist" (+)

Reuters' global managing editor has openly acknowledged that Arab intimidation influences his agency’s news coverage. So guess what... Canadian media organisation CanWest is replacing every instance of 'militants', 'activists', 'gunmen' etc. in Reuters dispatches by the more accurate and honest 'terrorists'. And Live From Brussels blogger has a Movable Type plugin, the CanWest filter. Just unzip and drop it into your MT plugins folder, and when publishing an MT entry select the 'CanWest' filter as text formatting. It will change all instances of the words militant, activist, fighter, gunman and resistance into the T-word... [Via editorsweblog]

The Culture of Extinction (+)

From Alex Steffen: At one point someone gave me a document -- a rather thick document -- which turned out to be a listing of the known species believed to have vanished. Page after page after page, gone. And everyone -- everyone -- agreed the die-off was going to get much, much worse. He has an extraordinary idea to raise awareness on mass extinction and our responsibility in creating and reversing it: I propose we make it possible for people to "adopt" a dead species, on one condition. That condition? That you have an image of that species tattooed on your body in a visible place, with the Linnaean name underneath.

Paralympic blogs (+)

Is it surprising that the 2004 Athens Paralympic games aren't covered by anyone? It's sort of a non-event, which is sad, considering the amazing efforts disabled athletes have to make to participate in sports. But here are a few blogs covering the Paralympic games, ending Sept. 28.

Yahoo blogs? (+)

Via IfeedYou, this post on The Unofficial Yahoo Weblog: Searching through Yahoo’s job lisitings tonight, I noticed something funny. On this job posting for a web developer, the first line under the description reads “Presentation-Layer Web Developer for Yahoo! Communities (Blogs)”. While the rest of the description is something you might find for any standard developer job in the Internet space, the fact that the word blogs specifically appears grabbed my eye. Also, this position, which is a product manager role, gives part of the description as “you will be responsible for developing and executing a strategy for our Message Boards, Polls, Ratings, Reviews, and Blogs platforms.” Hmmm….
