I'm a US citizen living abroad. Most people here were extremely shocked by Pres. Bush's reaction, interference really. Sad irony that medical progress leads to such abuse - keeping a dead person alive and refusing to allow her dignified death. I'm glad her husband won, and she is at last at peace.

My sister died a slow death. For Two years she suffered with cancer. She was kept alive only to suffer. Watching some one you love die is the worst thing that can happen to you. I never thought I would pray for her to die but at the end, I prayed so hard. Thank God he answered my prayers and she was taken but only after a long hard battle. Her husband was selfish in keeping her here only so he wouldn't have to continue life with out her. I loved her so much, I would have let her go long before!! Her pain was horrible. I would like to thank Terri's husband for thinking of her and because to the coverage in the news I have finially gotten a Living Will. Thanks Again and May God Bless

I completely agree.
I don't understand how we can have the rights that protect our individual freedoms but not one to choose when to leave this earthly coil. I assume that if doctors were able to help in this regard the way vets do we'd see less instances of people choosing far more gruesome ways of doing it themselves.
Yes, it is cruel to starve someone to death. But, unfortunately, the courts just allowed her feeding tube to be removed, not doctors to put her to sleep. That is the real tragedy.
You're totally right when you say that we treat our pets with respect. What I don't understand is why we're not able to do the same with human beings.

Hm. "Peace and with dignity" is how we treat our pets in this case. They get a sedative and are given an injection that stops their heart. We put them to sleep. That's peace and dignity. Starving someone to death is cruel.
I'm actually not partial to this case. This is the first I've spoken of it and one way or the other it's finally over. I just thought I'd weigh in on how peaceful her ending was.
