Although rituals marking the lunar New Year may vary in China and in other Asian cultures, these is only one underlying message "Peace and happiness for friends and family members in the upcoming year."
The Chinese lunar calendar is said to be the longest chronological record in history, dating back to 2600 B.C. and the Emperor Huang Ti. The calendar is based on the moon, not the sun, and is cyclical rather than linear.
