Pre-emptive stupidity
Isabelle Hontebeyrie
Having learned well from Bush, Russia has claimed the right to strike pre-emptively "terrorist bases" anywhere in the world.
Putin offered 300m roubles ($10m) for information leading to the arrest of Chechen rebel leaders and in return, Chechen rebels promised to give $20 million to anyone helping them to capture President Vladimir Putin.
Prone to use of violence to resolve any issue, British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw said Putin's move was understandable.
In its very enlightened editorial, The Daily Times (Pakistan) offers the following analysis: "All paradigms of security spring from one basic concept: self-preservation. But when people are pushed to a point where life becomes meaningless and when they are prepared to kill and get killed, they upend the concept of self-preservation. The resolve to lose life if it means perpetrating violence on the oppressor is hard to beat with mere use of force. The problem can only be tackled by going to the very root of that anger and desperation. But the Russian General’s statement does not indicate that Moscow is thinking of doing that. Its troops have carried out a systematic male genocide in Chechnya over the past four years, leaving thousands of Chechen women widows. Now these women are striking back and losing their lives and killing others in the process. This cycle cannot be allowed to go on. The US General’s statement upon arriving in Moscow is even more irksome because it shows Washington is prepared to give President Vladimir Putin a virtual carte blanche to go on doing exactly that which has already resulted in so much bloodshed. This is a recipe for disaster."

...the largest in recorded history, 150 million First Nations... a thing we like to forget. We did give them bits of land in the end to make it all better (that we chew from every year, golf courses and all), and tax free living. Darn! Why are they complaining?! (please read sarcastically once over again)

Well, let us not forget that America itself was built on a genocide - that of the American Indians, with more deaths to the Indian Wars than to the Second World War holocaust - so...
