Bin Laden captured! Or not?
Isabelle Hontebeyrie
At 8:30 this morning in Montreal, news agencies all over the world are reporting that Americans may have cornered Bin Laden, but the media in the U.S. are mum on the subject.
It seems that
The Australian (through a search on
Google News) was the first to report the news some 23 hours ago.
Since then, the buzz has been growing.. but only in Europe (the BBC), Asia and in the Middle East.
Nothing on CNN or the New York Times. ABC News and MSNBC are mute as well (note: all the previous URLs, as the one on Google News, link to relatively heavy screenshots).
So... if the Australians, the Israelis, the Indians and the Chinese (I first heard of the news on xinhuanet.com) are talking about it, why not the Americans?
In my opinion, two reasons could explain this:
- AFP broke the news. The French news agency is sometimes wrong, so caution is in order.
- the Bush administration, in the first months of an electoral campaign, cannot afford to make statements of that magnitude unless they have a prisoner (or a corpse) to show the public.
But let's not forget that President Bush's radio address yesterday insisted on the war against terrorism and the ongoing American efforts to end that threat.
