In an excellent
article published on
Le Monde.fr (the website of one of France’s most respected newspapers), Pierre Bouvier reports the latest action lead by
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Known for its high-profile actions, usually with the help of celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Alicia Silverstone or Alec Bladwin, PETA has struck once again.
This time, the focus is on mad cow disease and the battle is against beef.
According to Bouvier, PETA got hold of the domain name beef.com (a donation from Michael Fischer, a private individual) and uses it to denounce the Canadian and US governments’ position on mad cow disease, explaining that officials haven’t taken any measures to ensure the quality of meat sold to the population.
The website is also used to promote vegetarianism and encourages customers to switch to a more healthy and less dangerous diet: «The best way to protect yourself and your family is to stop eating animal products and choose a healthy vegan diet. A vegan diet not only protects you from mad cow disease, but is the most effective way to prevent foodborne illness, heart disease, strokes, and many other ailments.»
Furthermore, in order to raise funds, PETA has put the domain name beef.com up for grabs on Great Domains for 250 000 $US.
